With 15,000 km of coast line, 4,100 km of it along the mainland, Greece shows perfect conditions for wind energy. The growing development of the market for renewable energies is also underlined by the fact that, for the first time, the trade fair „Ecotec“ took place in Greece, in Athens by the end of May. WSB Neue Energien GmbH presented its company profile and project planning activities in Greece. The most important business segment, as in Germany, is supposed to be the development of wind farms. Given the generally high solar radiation throughout the country WSB also plans the development of photovoltaic plants.
The WSB Group intensely prepared its entry into the Greece market – since one year contacts have already been investigated, and different options for licences and financing have been evaluated. A first project acquisition success in the North of the country can be reported. Several sites have been secured, and within the following weeks the first met masts will be erected. „This wind data will be required to apply for the production permits next year“, explains Polydoros Pagonis, the WSB partner in charge of Greece.
Renewable energy shall be strongly developed in Greece. After the Greek government has enacted a law for renewable energy feed-in in 2006, a race for licences has started – however, the actual number of turbines erected until present is still relatively small. The reason for this lies in the country’s bureaucracy that leads to long approval procedures. Once these obstacles have been overcome, wind and photovoltaic projects are profitable. Similar to the German Renewable Energy Act (EEG), in Greece, too, a fixed remuneration applies for electricity generated from renewable energies for a period of 20 years. The feed-in tariff for onshore wind energy currently amounts to 75.82 €/ MWh and to 92,82 €/ MWh for offshore wind energy. The remuneration for photovoltaic solar power is also very attractive: operators receive between 402.82 €/ MWh and 452.82 €/ MWh on the mainland and up to 502.82 €/MWh on the Greek islands.
After France and the Czech Republic Greece is the third foreign market that the WSB Group is active in. In the future, further countries, in particular in Eastern Europe, are to follow.
